Η παρούσα ερευνητική εργασία πραγματεύεται την μετατόπιση των εννοιών που συνοδεύουν την σχέση της πόλης και του λιμένα μέσα από την ιστορική περιπλάνηση στον μεσογειακό κόσμο, φτάνοντας στο σήμερα, με την χωρική συνύπαρξη μεταξύ υφιστάμενων αστικών ιστών και λιμενικών υποδομών να αντανακλά το μεσογειακό μοντέλο. Αναδεικνύοντας τους διαρκείς μετασχηματισμούς, τις αντίρροπες δυναμικές, τις παθογένειες, τις προκλήσεις και τις δυνατότητες της σύγχρονης μεσογειακής πόλης-λιμένα, η εργασία ανατρέχει στις σύγχρονες σχεδιαστικές στρατηγικές οι οποίες επιτυγχάνουν την υπέρβαση του «εγκαταλελειμμένου κατωφλιού» με σκοπό την ενεργοποίηση του λιμενικού μετώπου ως νέας αστικής κεντρικότητας. Ο «Άτλαντας» αποτελεί σημαντικό εργαλείο αφού μέσω της χαρτογράφησης των μεσογειακών πόλεων-λιμένων σκιαγραφεί τόσο τα στοιχεία που τις ενώνουν όσο και αυτά που τις διαχωρίζουν. Με βάση τα παραπάνω, η εργασία εστιάζει σε τρεις πόλεις-λιμάνια ως παραδειγματικές εφαρμογές, την Μασσαλία, το Παλέρμο και την Καρθαγένη που με κοινό εννοιολογικό εργαλείο το «κατώφλι», αντιπροσωπεύουν διαφορετικές στρατηγικές και συνθετικές επιλύσεις, με απώτερο σκοπό τον επαναπροσδιορισμό της «ζώνης διεπαφής» και την άρση του ορίου.
