Τα ρομποτικά συστήματα χρησιμοποιούνται σε μεγάλος  εύρος εργασιών όπως η βαφή , η συναρμολόγηση , η τοποθέτηση , ο έλεγχος προϊόντων και οι δοκιμές. 
Η συνεχής  κατανάλωση πρώτων υλών έχει οδηγήσει την ανθρωπότητα στο να κατασκευάζει προϊόντα με υψηλές μηχανικές ιδιότητες και με τη λιγότερη δυνατή κατανάλωση πρώτης ύλης. Σε αυτό το σημείο εισάγεται η τυπολογική βελτιστοποίηση, μέσω της χρήση της οι μηχανικοί μπορούν να σχεδιάσουν και να αφαιρέσουν το υλικό το οποίο δεν είναι απαραίτητο για την χρήση του αντικειμένου.
Ο σχεδιασμός και η τυπολογική βελτιστοποίηση της άρπαγας του ρομποτικού βραχίονα που θα μελετήσουμε παρακάτω έγινε μέσω του προγράμματος Solidworks. Τα εξερχόμενα αποτελέσματα από το λογισμικό αποτέλεσαν βάση για την εύρεση της βέλτιστης μορφής της άρπαγας.
