Η κλιματική αλλαγή, η εξάντληση των φυσικών πόρων και η χρήση μη ανανεώσιμων πηγών ενέργειας έχουν ήδη αφήσει το αρνητικό τους αντίκτυπο στην ανθρωπότητα και υπογραμμίζουν την ανάγκη για την υιοθέτηση πιο βιώσιμων λύσεων. Σε αντίθεση με τους ανθρώπους, η φύση, μετά από δισεκατομμύρια χρόνια εξέλιξης, έχει αναπτύξει αποτελεσματικούς μηχανισμούς  για να λειτουργεί βιώσιμα. 
Η μίμηση των βιολογικών οργανισμών έχει τη δυνατότητα να προσφέρει πολύτιμη βοήθεια για την επίλυση των ανθρώπινων προκλήσεων. Στόχος της εργασίας είναι η διερεύνηση της σημασίας της βιομίμησης και του ρόλου που καλείται να διαδραματίσει στην εξέλιξη της αρχιτεκτονικής. Αρχικά, αναφέρονται οι ορισμοί της βιομίμησης και παραπλήσιων όρων, παρατίθεται η ιστορική αναδρομή της έμπνευσης των αρχιτεκτόνων από τη φύση, ενώ στη συνέχεια τονίζεται η αναγκαιότητα εφαρμογής της βιομίμησης στην αρχιτεκτονική, για τη διαχείριση των τωρινών της προβλημάτων.
