Ο κύριος παράγοντας από τους παραπάνω που χαρακτηρίζει την γένεση του πετρελαίου είναι τα μητρικά πετρώματα. Για αυτό είναι σημαντική η αξιολόγηση  και ο προσδιορισμός της ποιοτικής και ποσοτικής ανάλυσης του κοιτάσματος.
Για την αξιολόγηση των μητρικών πετρωμάτων χρησιμοποιούνται οι θερμικές αναλύσεις και η μέθοδος Rock-Eval. Επιπλέον πραγματοποιούνται η κοκκομετρική ανάλυση και η περίθλαση ακτίνων –Χ. 
Τα δείγματα που διερευνώνται στην συγκεκριμένη εργασία προέρχονται από την Δυτική Ελλάδα, όπου γίνεται ο προσδιορισμός της κατανομής του οργανικού υλικού. Συμπεραίνεται ότι η κατανομή είναι ομοιόμορφη στα κλάσματα. 
Στην συνέχεια, αξιολογείται o ποιοτικός έλεγχος της θερμοβαρυτομετρικής ανάλυσης. Ακόμη, πραγματοποιούνται θερμικές αναλύσεις στα δείγματα μετά από επεξεργασία με HCL.
Τέλος, με βάση την θερμική ανάλυση και με τον συνδυασμό της περίθλασης ακτίνων-Χ προσδιορίζονται τα χαρακτηριστικά ορυκτά που περιέχονται στα δείγματα.
