Η μελέτη του κλάδου πραγματοποιήθηκε με την  ανάλυση ενός δείγματος που αποτελείται από δύο (2) εταιρείες διύλισης και από δώδεκα (12) εταιρείες διακίνησης πετρελαιοειδών. Για να πραγματοποιηθεί η ανάλυση αυτή, χρησιμοποιήθηκαν συγκεκριμένοι χρηματοοικονομικοί δείκτες, με στόχο την αξιόπιστη μελέτη και ανάλυση της οικονομικής πορείας του κλάδου, κατά τη διάρκεια των ετών που αναφέρθηκαν παραπάνω. Επιπλέον, με την εφαρμογή πολυκριτήριας μεθόδου, PROMETHEE II, προκύπτει η τελική κατάταξη των εταιρειών, με βάση τις επιδόσεις τους σε συγκεκριμένους δείκτες.
