Many such large-scale tanks are located in regions with high seismicity. Therefore, very frequently base isolation technology has to be implemented to reduce the dynamic distress of the superstructure. In structural analysis software base isolators are modeled utilizing special nonlinear isolator elements. Global damping modeling of seismically isolated structures is a crucial issue, since improperly defined damping may worsen significantly the dynamic analysis results, mainly due to the so-called “damping leakage” phenomenon.
