Turbo codes are used in both 3G and 4G mobile communication networks, WiMAX, and (deep space) satellite communications as well as other applications where designers seek to achieve reliable information transfer over the bandwidth or latency constrained communication links in the presence of data-corrupting noise. In this thesis, we examine the basic principles behind channel coding and Turbo Coding and the essential parts of Turbo encoding and decoding algorithms which are used in several applications. Furthermore, we examine how the size of the interleaver, for both block and pseudorandom interleavers, affects the overall performance of the code.Οι κώδικες Turbo ανήκουν στην κλάση των υψηλής απόδοσης κωδίκων διόρθωσης λαθών και είναι οι πρώτοι πρακτικοί κώδικες οι οποίοι πετυχαίνουν σε απόδοση το όριο του Shannon. Οι κώδικες Turbo χρησιμοποιούνται στα κινητά δίκτυα 3G και 4G, στο πρώτυπο WiMAX, και στις δορυφορικές επικοινωνίες καθώς και σε διάφορες εφαρμογές όπου οι σχεδιαστές αναζητούν να πετύχουν αξιόπιστη μετάδοση πληροφορίας με περιορισμούς στο εύρος (bandwidth) ή στην καθυστέρηση (latency) του διαύλου επικοινωνίας. Σε αυτήν τη διπλωματική εργασία, εξετάζουμε τις βασικές αρχές της κωδικοποίησης καναλιού και των κωδίκων Turbo και τα κύρια μέρη των αλγορίθμων κωδικοποίησης και αποκωδικοποίησης Turbo που χρησιμοποιούνται σε διάφορες εφαρμογές.
