Κάθε ιστορική της φάση αρχαία, βιομηχανική και σύγχρονη συντίθεται από  ένα σύστημα ποικίλων αρχιτεκτονικών αφηγήσεων. Το νέο εγχαράσσεται πάνω στο παλιό και η βιομηχανική γραφή διαδέχεται την αρχαία. Το σύγχρονο κείμενο εγγράφεται στο παλιό, αρχαίο και βιομηχανικό, και συνθέτει ένα θραυσματικό πεδίο πόλης με αυστηρά όρια και έντονες αντιθέσεις. Το σύγχρονο τοπίο καλείται να βρει την ταυτότητα του μέσα σε ένα πλέγμα αντιφάσεων. Η πόλη που κάποτε φάνταζε ως η γη της επαγγελίας, με υπόσχεση για ένα καλύτερο αύριο, σήμερα μοιάζει ανίκανη να διαχειριστεί τα ετερόκλητα στοιχεία που την απαρτίζουν και το πολυσύνθετο ιστορικό παρελθόν της, βυθιζόμενη έτσι σε μία ανεξέλεγκτη υποβάθμιση.
Στόχος της διπλωματικής, είναι η ανάγνωση των διαφορετικών ιστορικών στρωμάτων της πόλης και η ενεργοποίησή τους ώστε αυτά να ενταχθούν ομαλά στον σύγχρονο αστικό ιστό. 
Η διπλωματική αυτή διερευνά τον τρόπο με το οποίο ένα αστικό κενό, προϊόν της αποβιομηχάνισης μπορεί να λειτουργήσει συνεκτικά προκειμένου να αρθρώσει τις ασυνέχειες που εμφανίζονται στην τομή βορρά νότου και διαγραμματικά εντοπίζονται στις έννοιες πόλη, αρχαιολογία, βιομηχανία, θάλασσα.
Με αφορμή την ανεπάρκεια του υφιστάμενου αρχαιολογικού μουσείου  και την πρόθεση για την ανέγερση νέου καθώς και την υπάρχουσα μερική πολιτιστική αξιοποίηση του βιομηχανικού συγκροτήματος, η μελέτη εστιάζει στην κατεύθυνση της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς ως μοχλός ανάπτυξης.
