Massive MIMO wireless communicationMassive MIMO wireless communicationΠροσομοίωση και μελέτη συστημάτων ασύρματων τηλεπικοινωνιών με πολλές κεραίες Διπλωματική Εργασία Diploma Work 2017-04-062017enΣε αυτή την εργασία, μελετάμε την αρχιτεκτονική δικτύου κινητής τηλεφωνίας “Massive MIMO.” Το χαρακτηριστικό αυτής της αρχιτεκτονικής είναι το ότι οι σταθμοί βάσης είναι εξοπλισμένοι με κεραίες το πλήθος των οποίων είναι πολύ μεγαλύτερο από τον αριθμό των ενεργών χρηστών. Aυτή η πολλά υποσχόμενη ιδέα προσφέρει σημαντικές βελτιώσεις στη φασματική και ενεργειακή απόδοση του συστήματος. Για να κατανοήσουμε καλύτερα το πώς λειτουργεί αυτή η τεχνολογία σε ένα ασύρματο κυψελωτό δίκτυο, εστιάζουμε τη μελέτη μας στην πρωτοποριακή και βραβευμένη δημοσίευση "Noncooperative cellular wireless with unlimited numbers of base station antennas" του Thomas L. Marzetta, ο οποίος εισήγαγε και διέδωσε την ιδέα του "Μassive MIMO". Προσομοιώνοντας ένα πλήρες δίκτυο κινητής τηλεφωνίας, διαπιστώνουμε την ευεργετική συνεισφορά της χρήσης πολλών κεραιών και αναδεικνύουμε ένα συγκεκριμένο πρόβλημα “παρεμβολών” (pilot contamination), το οποίο λαμβάνει χώρα κατά τη φάση της εκτίμησης καναλιού. Το φαινόμενο αυτό περιορίζει την ικανότητα του συστήματος και η αντιμετώπισή του είναι πρωταρχικής σημασίας. Η αντιμετώπιση του pilot contamination μπορεί να γίνει με χρήση μίας λιγότερο επιθετικής στρατηγικής επαναχρησιμοποίησης συχνοτήτων στο δίκτυο. Αυτή η στρατηγική βελτιώνει την απόδοση του συστήματος, όσον αφορά στην παρεμβολή ανεπιθύμητων σημάτων, αλλά δεν επιτυγχάνει τα επιθυμητά αποτελέσματα, όσον αφορά στους ρυθμούς μετάδοσης δεδομένων. Τέλος, μελετάμε μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα νέα ιδέα, η οποία παρουσιάζεται στο άρθρο “A coordinated approach to channel estimation in large-scale multiple-antenna systems,” και αντιμετωπίζει το πρόβλημα (τουλάχιστον σε θεωρητικό επίπεδο). Πρόκειται για έναν αλγόριθμο ο οποίος, σε συνδυασμό με ένα βελτιωμένο εκτιμητή καναλιού, αντιμετωπίζει το pilot contamintation, εκμεταλλευόμενος τις πολλές κεραίες των σταθμών βάσης και τις πληροφορίες που αντλούνται από τα στατιστικά δεύτερης τάξης των διανυσματικών καναλιού.In this thesis, we study a novel cellular network architecture, called “Massive MIMO”. The characteristic of massive MIMO architecture is to equip Base Stations with a number of antennas much larger than the number of active users. This promising idea offers enormous enhancements in spectral and energy efficiency, simple signal processing, and more. To understand how massive MIMO works in a wireless cellular system, we focus our study on the pioneering and award-winning paper "Noncooperative cellular wireless with unlimited numbers of base station antennas" of Thomas L. Marzetta, who introduced and popularized the concept of massive MIMO. By simulating a scenario of multicellular wireless system, we see the beneficial contribution of the use of multiple antennas (more than 100) and learn about the problem of pilot contamination, which is generated during the channel estimation phase. This phenomenon limits the capacity of the system and its elimination is of primary importance. To mitigate pilot contamination, we may use a less aggressive frequency reuse strategy in the cellular network but, as we will see, this improves the system behavior in terms of interference but it does not lead to high communication rates. After having realized the restrictive role of pilot contamination, we study a very interesting novel idea, which has been presented in the paper entitled “A coordinated approach to channel estimation in large-scale multiple-antenna systems,” and seems to address the problem (at least at a theoretical level).
