Το πρόβλημα το οποίο προκύπτει από την αυξημένη παραγωγή ενέργειας από ΑΠΕ και η επακόλουθη ενίσχυση του δικτύου, με στόχο την εκμετάλλευση της παραγόμενης ενέργειας αλλά και τη διατήρηση της αξιοπιστίας και της ασφάλειας του συστήματος, οδηγεί στην αναζήτηση μεθόδων ελαχιστοποίησης του κόστους επέκτασης του, υπό συγκεκριμένους περιορισμούς. 
Η παρούσα Μεταπτυχιακή διατριβή στοχεύει στην παρουσίαση των Ανανεώσιμων Πηγών Ενέργειας και την επίδραση τους στο Σύστημα Μεταφοράς. Αρχικά, αναφέρονται τα πλεονεκτήματα και τα μειονεκτήματα της μεγάλης Διείσδυσης ΑΠΕ σε ΣΗΕ και οι μέθοδοι μοντελοποίησης παραγωγής ενέργειας από ΑΠΕ. Στη συνέχεια, περιγράφονται το πρόβλημα της επέκτασης του δικτύου μεταφοράς με ΑΠΕ, η μαθηματική του διατύπωση, καθώς και ο γενετικός αλγόριθμος, ο οποίος  αναπτύχθηκε για την ελαχιστοποίηση του κόστους και επομένως τη βελτιστοποίηση της επέκτασης του δικτύου, υπό συγκεκριμένες συνθήκες και γενικότερα περιορισμούς.
