Attached growth processes are classified as aerobic (either aerated or non-aerated), anaerobic and hybrid (anaerobic/anoxic and aerobic). The main advantage of attached growth systems is that they maintain a high concentration of microorganisms resulting in high removal rates at relatively small hydraulic retention times. The basic design and operational characteristics of various systems are presented in terms of packing materials, organic loading rates, treatment temperature, as well as achieved removal rates.</efrbr-expression:summarizationOfContent><efrbr-expression:useRestrictionsOnTheExpression type="creative-commons">http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/</efrbr-expression:useRestrictionsOnTheExpression><efrbr-expression:note type="journal name">Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology</efrbr-expression:note><efrbr-expression:note type="journal volume">88</efrbr-expression:note><efrbr-expression:note type="journal number">2</efrbr-expression:note><efrbr-expression:note type="page range">190-204</efrbr-expression:note></efrbr-expression:expression><efrbr-person:person identifier="http://users.isc.tuc.gr/~eloupasaki"><efrbr-person:nameOfPerson vocabulary="TUC:LDAP">
