The emission estimations from the LandGEM model were further compared with the IPCC methodology for the evaluation of landfill emissions. In contrast to the IPCC method in which the methane emission potential is calculated based on the amount of waste being disposed each year, the LandGEM model determines the methane emission based on the amount of remaining organic waste. Furthermore, the LandGEM model assumes a time lag period of one year before the prevalence of anaerobic conditions and the beginning of biogas production.
