Influence of the vehicular transport on the air pollution levels in the city of Chania, GreeceInfluence of the vehicular transport on the air pollution levels in the city of Chania, Greece Πλήρης Δημοσίευση σε Συνέδριο Conference Full Paper 2015-11-132008enThe main objective of the current paper was to study the effect of road transport on the air pollution levels in the city of Chania (Crete, Greece). The methodology used was based on simulations and data processing related to air pollutants from the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP) database, for the years 2000 and 2003, as well as, on measurements of air pollutants using a multi-gas detector at different locations in the city centre during traffic rush hours during the year 2005. The calculated road transport emissions from the EMEP database for CO and NMVOC during 2003 were significantly reduced compared to the year 2000. In contrast, the emissions of NOx, SOx and NH3 increased slightly. The calculated from the EMEP average yearly concentrations of CO, NO, NO2, SO2, PM10 and PM2.5 were lower than the upper limits established by the European Union. In accordance to these data, the measured in the frame of this work concentrations of the air pollutants NO, NO2 and SO2 were also lower than the established upper limits.
