The technique is applied by using a suitably adapted commercial indirect boundary element code, permitting the determination of the displacement, strain and stress fields in mulltiply-connected elastic bodies. The critical conditions are then determined by empoying a suitable failure criterion. The results of the numerical analysis are compared with the respective ones obtained from a series of experiments with pre-cracked specimens simulating the semi-infinite medium. The agreement is proved to be satisfactory.</efrbr-expression:summarizationOfContent><efrbr-expression:useRestrictionsOnTheExpression type="creative-commons">http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/</efrbr-expression:useRestrictionsOnTheExpression><efrbr-expression:note type="journal name">Archives of Mechanics</efrbr-expression:note><efrbr-expression:note type="journal volume">53</efrbr-expression:note><efrbr-expression:note type="journal number">4-5</efrbr-expression:note><efrbr-expression:note type="page range">421-437</efrbr-expression:note></efrbr-expression:expression><efrbr-person:person identifier="http://users.isc.tuc.gr/~gexadaktylos"><efrbr-person:nameOfPerson vocabulary="TUC:LDAP">
