A nonlinear equation approach is proposed for the numerical solution of the arising variational inequality problems. The advantage of this approach is that is permits the use of standard nonlinear equation solvers instead of more specialized ones, with an obvious enhancement in flexibility and generality of the resulting software. Numerical examples of waves interacting with unilateral cracks illustrate the theory.</efrbr-expression:summarizationOfContent><efrbr-expression:useRestrictionsOnTheExpression type="creative-commons">http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/</efrbr-expression:useRestrictionsOnTheExpression><efrbr-expression:note type="journal name">Engineering analysis with boundary elements</efrbr-expression:note><efrbr-expression:note type="journal volume">5-6</efrbr-expression:note><efrbr-expression:note type="journal number">23</efrbr-expression:note><efrbr-expression:note type="page range">487–501</efrbr-expression:note></efrbr-expression:expression><efrbr-person:person identifier="http://users.isc.tuc.gr/~gestavroulakis"><efrbr-person:nameOfPerson vocabulary="TUC:LDAP">
