Στις περιπτώσεις αυτές, εξαιρετικά αποτελεσματική έχει αποδειχθεί η μέθοδος της ενισχυμένης βιοαποικοδόμησης του πετρελαίου η οποία στηρίζεται στην ικανότητα κάποιων μικροοργανισμών-βακτηρίων και μυκήτων- να αποδομούν το πετρέλαιο σε σχετικά αβλαβείς ουσίες δίνοντας ως τελικά προϊόντα το διοξείδιο του άνθρακα (CO2) και το νερό. Η προαναφερθείσα διαδικασία μπορεί να επιταχυνθεί με την χρήση ορισμένων θρεπτικών συστατικών όπως ο φώσφορος και το άζωτο, τα οποία δρουν στην διεπιφάνεια  OIL-WATER (νερού-πετρελαίου) και ευνοούν την ανάπτυξη των μικροοργανισμών.
Στην παρούσα διπλωματική μελετήθηκε ο τρόπος με τον οποίον κάποια λιπόφιλα φυσικά και χημικά λιπάσματα όπως η λεκιθίνη, το Basfoliar Avant Natur SL αλλά και ένα surfactant (επιφανειακά ενεργή ουσία) επιδρούν στην αποτελεσματικότητα της βιοαποδόμησης του πετρελαίου.
