Η μέθοδος της ειδικής ηλεκτρικής αντίστασης είναι η πιο κατάλληλη για τον εντοπισμό των υφάλμυρων υπόγειων νερών. Στα πλαίσια γεωφυσικής διασκόπησης στην ευρύτερη περιοχή των Φαλάσαρνων Χανίων εφαρμόστηκαν οι μέθοδοι της   ηλεκτρικής τομογραφίας και της ηλεκτρικής βυθοσκόπησης. 
Στην εργασία αυτή παρουσιάζονται και αξιολογούνται τα αποτελέσματα της γεωφυσικής έρευνας στο νότιο παράκτιο τμήμα της περιοχής των Φαλάσαρνων. Πιο συγκεκριμένα συλλέχθηκαν δεδομένα από τέσσερις γραμμές μελέτης ηλεκτρικής τομογραφίας συνολικού μήκους 1200  μέτρων και δύο ηλεκτρικές βυθοσκοπήσεις. Κατά την επεξεργασία των δεδομένων της ηλεκτρικής τομογραφίας  και βυθοσκόπησης χρησιμοποιήθηκαν τα λογισμικά πακέτα  RES2DINV και IPI2WIN για την απεικόνιση της γεωηλεκτρικής δομής του υπεδάφους. 
Οι γεωηλεκτρικές τομές συνδυάστηκαν με δεδομένα από πηγάδια και γεωτρήσεις, όπως η ηλεκτρική αγωγιμότητα νερού και  η στάθμη νερού. Από την σύγκριση των γεωηλεκτρικών, γεωτρητικών και γεωλογικών δεδομένων προέκυψε ότι το φαινόμενο της υφαλμύρωσης των υπόγειων υδροφορέων είναι εκτεταμένο. Οι γεωλεκτρικές τομές απεικόνισαν τις θέσεις όπου εμφανίζεται το φαινόμενο της υφαλμύρωσης στις οποίες παρατηρούνται πολύ μικρές τιμές της ειδικής ηλεκτρικής αντίστασης (&lt; 20 Ωm) καθώς και τους κυριότερους γεωλογικούς σχηματισμούς οι οποίοι αποτελούνται από αλουβιακά ριπίδια του Τεταρτογενούς καθώς και από μάργες του Νεογενούς.
