Ο άνθρωπος προκειμένου να ανιχνεύσει και να συλλέξει το γλυκό νερό που υπάρχει τόσο στην επιφάνεια όσο και στο υπέδαφος επινόησε διάφορες μεθόδους καικατασκεύασε πλήθος τεχνικών έργων (πχ: φράγματα, λιμνοδεξαμενές, υδρογεωτρήσεις κ.ά).
    Η παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία εστιάζει στις υδρογεωτρήσεις. Οι υδρογεωτρήσεις αποτελούν ορύγματα μεγάλου βάθους σε σχέση με τη διάμετρο τους, τα οποία εξυπηρετούν  στην αναζήτηση και εκμετάλλευση των υδροφόρων στρωμάτων. Για τη διάνοιξη τωνυδρογεωτρήσεων χρησιμοποιούνται τα γεωτρύπανα.
    Στη σχεδίαση της βέλτιστης ανόρυξης παίζει σημαντικό ρόλο η κατάλληλη ρύθμιση των γεωτρητικών παραμέτρων. Οι γεωτρητικές παράμετροι περιγράφουν τα μεγέθη που συνδέονται με τη λειτουργία και τον εξοπλισμό του γεωτρυπάνου συμπεριλαμβανομένου του γεωτρητικού ρευστού. Σκοπός της εργασίας αυτής είναι η περιγραφή των παραμέτρων αυτών και η εξέταση του τρόπου επίδρασης τους στο ρυθμό προχώρησης του κοπτικού.
    Στα πλαίσια της διπλωματικής γίνεται ακόμη παρουσίαση ορισμένων τεχνικών διάτρησης.
