Life expectancy at birth estimates the average longevity of a newborn, given the mortality schedule observed in a period. This paper aims to analyze comparatively the developments of both indicators since the 1950s on a global level. The estimation of healthy life expectancy is based on the stochastic theory, which allows studying this indicator in contemporary populations and historical ones. Results of the analysis indicate the great diversity occurring among human populations not only in the past but also today.
