Summary

The need to reuse water, combined with the strict legislative frameworks that have been established as well as the increase in energy costs have pushed Wastewater Treatment Facilities (WTP) to the need for their energy and environmental optimization. Addressing these challenges requires environmentally friendly solutions with low operating costs and energy consumption. The hydrocyclone is a mechanical technology that applies centrifugal motion to classify and separate incoming solids based on density, widely used in various industries including waste treatment. Hydrocyclones are a technology with low capital and operating costs, while they require minimal space, no use of chemicals, minimal energy expenditure during their operation and offer high flexibility to an EEL, due to their simple operation and the possibility of placing them in a variety of positions. of the installation.The purpose of this thesis is the dimensioning and evaluation of the performance of a hydrocyclone in terms of the removal of Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5) as well as Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) in primary. In this context, a hydrocyclone with a maximum flow of 50 m3/h was designed and installed at EEL Chania, after the stage of primary treatment. According to the experimental results, the percentage removal of TSS was calculated as 31.25 ± 2.12%, while for BOD5 and COD it was 17.7 ± 2.15% and 9.96 ± 2.01%, respectively . At the same time, the hydrocyclone condensate was calculated to have a solids content equal to 840 ± 100 mg/L. The above results were considered quite encouraging regarding the possibility of the hydrocyclone to provide satisfactory yields in the treatment of primary municipal wastewater with minimal energy costs. Nevertheless, water is judged by its further study in terms of its geometry and its placement point so as to examine the optimal operating conditions of the system.
