Architectural intervention to an existing industrial shell is a complex undertaking which needs to balance sensitive values, with usually contrasting natures. We must, however, recognize that in the saturated modern urban fabric, they are one of the few substantial solutions for corrective intervention on a significant scale. My thesis aims to examine the industrial shells in the course of their history, and to distinguish their various qualities. Then we examine 3 important examples of important cases in Greece and another 3 in the rest of the European area, giving us the opportunity to see the differences in attitude and values we adopt in our country, compared to others.Of course, the goal is not only to obtain positive examples, but also to recognize flaws to be avoided in each case. The selection of examples is based on relevance to the topic of my design thesis, as the cases are of ample variety and do not necessarily conform to the standard of the abandoned medium-scale factory it concerns.
