Summary

The purpose of this thesis is to develop an operational algorithm for designing a system that efficiently harnesses energy from photovoltaic panels, ensuring self-sufficiency within the system. Excess energy is used for hydrogen production through water electrolysis to meet specific annual targets. The energy management algorithm is explained, taking the State Of Charge (SOC) of the battery into consideration as a control variable. It determines the operational conditions for all system components to ensure their optimal performance. Finally, an optimization package in Matlab is employed to determine the optimal sizes for subsystems (photovoltaic panels, batteries, and electrolysis units). Based on this algorithm and meteorological data for the Anogia and Tavronitis region, various scenarios are explored to fulfill the energy requirements of specific communities, while simultaneously achieving defined H2 production targets.
