In medical treatment, the intravenous drug infusion pump which is one of the most important pieces of medical equipment is involved in accidents due to mishandling as a result of faulty design. This particular thesis deals with the Ergonomic Design of intravenous drug infusion pumps with the aim of evaluating the usability of these medical devices, under the study of some basic design principles (usability engineering) and based on the level of skills and rules of thumb that govern the users of the specific systems. The usability study of an existing system (Alaris infusion pump), which is one of the most widespread smart drug infusion pump systems, will be carried out, while at the same time the devices used in the intensive care units (ICU) of Greek hospitals will be studied, where possible errors that occur during their use will be identified and their causes will be studied. Finally, new general operating specifications for the systems will be defined in accordance with the principles of ergonomic product design.
