In integrated minicipal solid waste (MSW) management systems, collection and transport are the processes with the most significant energy footprint and the most significant impact on the urban environment, due to vehicle fuel consumption and the gas emissions. The impact on the environment seems to depend not only on energy consumption, but also on gas emissions, as determined by the European compliance standards of combustion engines, depending on their date of manufacture. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the fleet of MSW collection and transport vehicles of the Municipality of Argyroupoli-Elliniko for the year 2021, as a representative municipality of the Attica Region. Logistics, data were collected from the archives of the Municipality, which were analyzed and extract valuable outcomes. Initially, the collection process was distinguished from the transport process while three different fractions of waste were defined (mixed, recyclable, bio-waste), four zones (residential, commercial, industrial, tourist) -according to the land uses in them- and four environmental vehicle compliance standards (Euro III, Euro IV, Euro V and Euro VI) - according on the fleet synthesis. Then, the fuel consumption was calculated based on all these parameters and finally, the corresponding gas emissions. The results showed that the most influential factor for fuel consumption is the planning of the routes and that the gas emission limits, as set by the European compliance standards, which contribute to the improvement of the environmental footprint of the vehicle fleet and have a beneficial effect, on air quality.
