Summary

In this thesis we attempt to study, understand, and decode the Greek tourism model, its problems and its potential future. More specifically, we begin by studying the global social phenomena that lead to the growth of mass tourism, a model that reigned throughout the past century. What follows is a historical throwback of modern tourism in Greece, split in three distinct periods: 1950-1970, 1970-1980, and 1980 until today. Next, we study the problems that both effect tourism, but also the ones caused by tourism, beginning with the problems that were most unique for us personally and closing the chapter with the most common problems of the tourism industry. The concept of consumption, more specifically over-consumption, is discussed as the main factor that morphed the current model for the tourism industry. Furthermore, concepts such as environmental sustainability, sustainable development, the sustainability of the current economic model, and alternative tourism, emerge as the main research points for the future of Greek tourism. To conclude, alternative tourism is studied as a possible solution, with a broader target of understanding how tourism models work, in order to achieve a sustainable development of the Greek tourism industry.
