Summary

Geostatistical prediction methods are increasingly used in earth sciences and engineering to improve our knowledge of space and time attributes. During mining activities, it is essential to estimate any contamination of the soil and groundwater in the area for environmental reasons and to guide the reclamation once mining operations are finished. This thesis presents the geostatistical analysis of the groundwater content in specific pollutants concentrations (Cd and Mn) in a group of mines in Northern Greece. The Correlation between Cd and Mn was investigated during the preliminary analysis of the data. Data normalization was performed using the logarithm, as well as trend approximation, to improve data stationarity. Then, the spatial dependence of the measurements was determined using variogram analysis and estimation. The spatial variability of the pollutants content in groundwater was estimated and presented employing maps using the Ordinary Kriging (OK) method and inversing the transformations.
