Summary

The main scope of this diploma thesis is the development of a complex geometrical product by using computer numerical control machine (CNC). Specifically the construction of spiral bevel gear for crown pinion systems is being studied, which require time consuming processes as computer programming and machining. Initially, a dedicated 3D modeling software is used to design the product and then a computer aided manufacturing (CAM) software is used in order to setup and simulate the different machining processes. Furthermore, the use of different cutting tools is explored, in order to select the optimal machining strategy targeting time reduction. Two helical bevel gear workpieces are developed from different materials and dimension measurements are executed to identify any differences between the digital models and the real parts. The construction of the parts is carried out in the machining center (CNC) of the Machine Tools Laboratory. Finally, the possibility of heat treatment (quenching) on the workpieces is examined, as also the ability of measuring thermal deformations –as a change in dimensions- after this process.
