Summary

The efficient exploitation of oil reservoirs requires a fast and inexpensive way to assess the properties of the reservoir fluids, both at the opening pressure, as well as in the entire range of pressures and oil compositions that might occur during production. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate the accuracy of the empirical equations in the estimation of some characteristic oil properties, such as the boiling point pressure (Pb), the volumetric coefficient of oil formation (Bo) and the gas-to-oil ratio (Rs).The selection of the appropriate set of empirical equations was based on the range of input values and the expected accuracy of prediction of each equation. The set that was used covers the widest possible range of oil cases and it tested against different lab data from 24 oil samples. The estimated values for 24 oil samples were subsequently used as target values for the tuning of a cubic equation of state (EOS). The EOS was later used to estimate the rest of the oil properties which are necessary for the oil production, such as the density of the liquid and the Rs at the reservoir temperature and at any pressure. The results from the empirical equations and the EOS were compared against lab measurements for the 24 oil cases.Based on the aforementioned comparison, the equation of Al-Mehaideb 1997 was the most accurate for the prediction of the volumetric coefficient of oil (Bo), the equation of Hassan 2011 for the boiling pressure (Pb) and the equation of Petrofsky & Farshad 1993 for the gas-to-oil ratio (Rs).
