Mining is an important source of economy and contributes to human evolution and the crea-tion of civilization. In particular, our country, which belongs to the European Union (EU) and has a rich mineral resource, it is a very viable and profitable activity. At the same time, mining is highly intrusive to the natural environment, with a visible environmental foot-print, particularly in open-cast operations, and with particularly adverse effects, leading to the degradation of the environment of an area and the distortion of the topography of the area. This fact made it necessary to take measures, through legislative regulations, in order to pro-tect the environment. Such a measure is the mandatory restoration of such disturbed ecosys-tems.Present thesis focuses on the formation and rehabilitation of the aggregate quarry at "Latzi-mas" in the Rethymnon of Crete. In this context, an analysis and description of the location of the quarry site and the wider area is carried out, which leads to the proposal of a restora-tion plan for this quarry site. The restoration proposal proposed in this thesis includes:• the horticultural restoration of the quarry benches,• the horticultural restoration in the plateau, by using appropriate plant species,• the reuse of the quarry through the creation of a vineyard. This concept was formulated with a view to the full integration of the space into the natural environment, its functional and aesthetic upgrading and its reuse by the people who are in direct contact with it. The proposed restoration plan is accompanied by a general organiza-tion plan at two different scales and by images - views from the 3D model, which give a general idea of the final form of the site.In conclusion, the restoration of the quarry site at "Latzimas" will bring significant benefits, such as the ecological upgrading and at the same time the aesthetic improvement of the area, while at the same time it can be a motivation for the implementation of similar projects both in the wider region and in other areas of Greece.
