The new Cretan highway (BOAK) has presented a serious problem of subsidence at the point of ‘’Nopigeia’’ and specifically in the position of ‘’Mavromoustako’’ from the start of the decade of the 90s .The point of the current Thesis is exploring the mechanism that led to the failure of the embankment which was constructed in area of interest. In that context some solutions for this problem are presented.Initially the geological formations of the area of interest was perused, the geotechnical cross-section was designed accordingly. On the basis of the results from the standard penetration test (SPT) the geotechnical parameters of the edaphic formations were extracted , for the rocky slope the results were extracted depending on the Geological Strength Index (GSI).The exploring of the mechanism of failure and the calculation of the stability of the area of interest was completed using the modeling software Geostudio 2008 and specifically SLOPE/W.From the outcome of the solutions it was derived that the failure of the embankment was a circular failure.For the stabilization of the slope the construction of a new embankment by the end of the already existing one is suggested, which will work as a counterweight and will lead to 1.2 safety factor.
