The current thesis’s goal is to technically-economically evaluate a pellet production unit fed by olive tree residues, which will be located at the area of the Municipality of North Corfu. First, the basic characteristics of the pellet biomass are being described, paying special attention to the advantages of biomass over conventional fuels. In addition, the overall environmental benefits of the whole activity are assessed. Next, the current state of the environment in which this facility is to be set up is being presented. Emphasis is given to the project’s sitting which is chosen according to the elements of the natural and man-made environment. Then, the collection and transportation network of the raw material are being presented, through which the characteristic prices of the project, in terms of costs, are to be estimated. Moreover, the sizing and design of the project are being estimated. In other words, the equipment, the work force and the necessary processes are being calculated. After all, the total cost of the project requires the estimation of the following, all installation costs, equipment costs, building installation costs, transport costs, costs of the complete man-force, energy costs and land costs, which are to be aggregated for the purpose of finally obtaining the total costs price for the creation of the aforementioned unit. Finally, technical and economic appraisal of the project is resumed supported by means of evidence based information furthermore provided in detailed charts. The thesis is concluded by a discussion of the actual necessity, environmentally speaking, of the whole project.
