This paper discusses the design and costing of a unit of anaerobic digestion aiming to the production of thermal energy and electricity taking the organic fraction of solid waste and sludge of sewerage as raw material in the area of Chania, Crete, according to data collected by DEDISA. Initially, there is a detailed description of the process of anaerobic digestion aiming to the production of biogas as well as a definition of its uses. The quality of the organic fraction of solid waste as substrate for anaerobic digestion is also referenced and discussed. Moreover, a complete unit of anaerobic digestion is designed and proposed, according to the existing data, so that it can eventually operate and be economically sustainable. The technological and economic study of the plant is presented in the last chapter of the paper.
