Summary

The present Master thesis deals with the activation of the coastal area, located northeast of the island Lefkada, through a set of interventions which mainly include the existing memory traces and aim to re-establish them as vivid parts of the city, without disturbing the dominance of the natural landscape. At the entrance of the island, in the northern part of the study site, the medieval Fortress of Saint Mavra is located, as well as the now industrially inactive building envelope of the old TAOL winery on the beach “Kastro” in the area of Gyra. In the southern part, from where the entrance to the city is currently located, are Angelos Sikelianos Square and the Municipal Garden (Boschetto or Poets' Square) with the latter carrying important elements of timeless cultural meaning and the collective memory of the island's inhabitants. With the main goal of strengthening the “dialogue” between present and past, it is initially proposed to create a network of sidewalks, connecting the city’s coastal front with the wider castle area, both being key point of our proposal. As a next step, an attempt is made to “staple” the two now distinct public spaces at the entrance of the city (Angelos Sikelianos Square and Boschetto) and thus unifying them with the existing sidewalks of the organic urban grid. At the end of the parallel path between the canal and the lagoon, where stops with nature interest are placed, a new relationship landscape, man and historical remains is created. It is also chosen, to convert the old TAOL winery into a wine museum, and configure spaces for the promotion of local products and the hosting of the already existing events of the city (such as the festivals of Speech and Art and the International Folklore Festival), uses that are in line with everyday life and the town’s cultural heritage.
