Summary

The present thesis focuses on the load of marine litter along the Greek coastline. All the data were collected and shared by the A.C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation, from their clean up actions within the project ‘’Typhoon’’ during the period from 31st of July 2019 to 27th of February 2021. In Greece, the most common sources of marine litter found to be fishing activity and mixed items, either they were left by people on the beach, or they ended up there by sea currents or surface runoff from nearby areas. The top five items that were collected from the Greek coastline are different plastic fragments smaller than 2,5cm, polystyrene foam pieces above 2,5cm, water or soda bottles, various ropes, strings and cords and caps and lids. The biggest load of items was recorded at Katerini and Kitros, both located in Thermaikos Gulf , as well as at some islands of North and North-East Aegean, Limnos, Agios Eustratios, Psara and Antipsara. The problem of marine litter was more noticeable in uninhabited or difficult accessible areas due to the lack of waste collection and management systems.
