The depletion of the planet's conventional fuel reserves and the ever-increasing demand for energy combined with the rapid environmental degradation have forced modern societies to seek sustainable solutions in order to reverse this situation. The established linear production model which focuses on the extraction of resources, their use and unexploited disposal, needs immediate restructuring. Thus, concepts such as circular economy, eco-design and ecolabelling have emerged. This diploma thesis deals with the analysis of the principles of theseconcepts, as well as the relationship and interaction among them. It is of utmost importance that businesses, consumers and policy makers recognize the importance and the multiple social, economic and environmental benefits of these processes, contributing to their successful implementation. In addition, the application of the above concepts to solar thermal panels is studied in order to evaluate their environmental profile.
