The purpose of this paper is to explore the process of assimilation of the ruins in the modern urban fabric and its influence on it, as a result of various degrees of interventions on the abandoned building. The historical area of Metaxourgeio in Athens was chosen as a case study. More specifically, the area studied includes the building blocks between the streets Piraeus, Deligiorgi, Achilleos, Constantinoupoleos and Iera Odos. The main object of the paper is to study five typical cases of assimilation of abandoned buildings-ruins in Metaxourgeio, which have contributed to the evolution of the special character on this neighborhood. These five cases of ruins were selected as they represent three different cases of graded intervention as well as their subdivisions in the ruin. 1. The ruin as an image of vacuum. 2. The active ruin. i. Picture of a ruin in the city - Minimal functional intervention. ii. Image of a ruin as part of a functional ensemble. iii. Picture of a ruin in the city - Internal functional intervention. 3. The undoing of the ruin. What is being presented in this paper is a historical description of each case of the abandoned buildings, as well as their current condition, where each of them have been assimilated in various ways and have received various degrees of interventions. Special emphasis is given to the notion of a new use for some abandoned buildings-ruins, as well as their influence on the broader character of the area.
