Summary

In the years prior to the Greek War of Independence, Syros bears the image of a sparsely populated and unknown place, with Ano Syros being the lone settlement of the island. With the outbreak of the War of Independence in 1821 and culminating in the destruction of Chios in 1822, the persecuted Greeks arrived on the island. Thus, a new city of the 19th century was born, Ermoupolis. It is the one to be selected, emerged and dominate as the most important commercial, industrial and shipping center of the newly formed state. This work studies the urban and architectural imprint of internal migration in 19th century Greece and specifically of the Chian refugees in Syros. The objectives of this research are the urban fabric and the architectural works that resulted due to the relocation of the Chians to Ermoupolis. Characteristically, the districts of Vaporia and Metamorfosi (also known as Vrontado) are examined, whose inhabitants are rushed from Chios.Through the analysis of the conditions and the characteristics of the relocation of the Chian refugees, the way of their relocation in Ermoupolis is examined, which shaped the urban landscape and the physiognomy of the city. Thus, a connection of the place of origin with the specific districts of Ermoupolis is observed, through the recall of the spatial memory, in order to sense this new place as their home. Forming, therefore, the Chians the final image of the city, they lead in the development and prosperity of this new place.
