The context of this thesis will be the unconnected system of Crete and the utilization of its potential in renewable energy sources in order to reduce production costs and carbon dioxide emissions. By simulating the interconnection of Crete with the mainland of Greece by using MATLAB, we will conclude with the economic benefits that this interconnection will provide. For the cases, the 100% penetration of the already installed renewable energy sources in Crete was used, as well as the AC power flow, DC power flow and their combination. This thesis aims to ensure the supply of the energy demands of the island of Crete, the improvement of the environment and the quality of life of the inhabitants, the significant reduction of energy production cost and also the further exploitation of its renewable resources.
