In this diploma thesis, the design of an open pit and access roads dedicated to the exploitation of limestone ore is presented. For the design of the pit and the roads the Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018 software was used. The purpose was to find the optimum inclination of the access road based on fuel and tires consumptions. Three inclinations of the access road were considered for this purpose namely 5%, 8% and 10%. The pit which is already operating is located at Latzima in Rethymnon prefecture (Crete). We have started by constructing the 3D topography of the quarry at its present phase. Next, we have created the pit pushback with elevation of the lower bench 60 m below the current one. Based on the future topography we have designed the route of the road considering three different inclinations namely 5%, 8% and 10%. Based on these 3 scenarios we have calculated the costs related to the fuel oil consumption and tires consumption and we have found the optimum road inclination.
