Elounda Bay constitutes an area stigmatized by the reconstruction of its landscape’s due to the phenomenon of tourism. The final outcome of which has been both either positive or negative. The spatial contradictions, the coexistence of history, landscape and tourism have contributed to the formation of the current image of the bay. Our research thesis is divided in two sections. The first deals with the historical and residential development of Elounda bay from the antiquity until today. We delve into the period from 1960 onwards, when the most obvious spatial changes have been observed as an effect of flourish of tourism. At the same time, we mention studies and proposals that aim to the improvement of the area. Based on the above, in the second section we critically analyze and evaluate the current image of Elounda bay, the degree of the impact of tourism, as well as the alteration caused to the bay. Each section is accompanied by maps and collages that we created, in order to achieve a better understanding of the area that is being studied.
