The grid, fundamentally incorporating measurement, proportion and scale, has been considered an integral design/organisational tool in architecture and urban planning since ancient times. However, the overall concept of the grid has been falsely characterized as being limiting and monotonous in regards to its use. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the ideological, geometrical and constructive extensions of the architectural grid, with references to historic examples. This research paper will investigate architectural and urban planning projects which have been designed with the use of the architectural grid. The grid has significantly influenced the history of architecture; however in the modern days it is evident that it is developing an altered appearance. The reasoning behind the selection of these projects was based on their intricate process of design as well as on the versatility of their use of the grid. Does the main concept of the grid structure limit freedom or promote it?
