Summary

The phenomenon of tourism clearly brings many profits, not only in the financial sector, but at the same time it is one of the most significant factors that contributes to the alteration of the Greek landscape, natural and manmade. The region of Apokoronas is a typical example, due to the fact that until the decade of 70’s, the natural landscape consists the region as a primary sector area and its inhabitants were mainly engaged in agriculture, livestock breeding and to a lesser extent fishing whereas today, most of the residents have turned their professional interest in tourism. This results in a great contradiction between the natural landscape, the infrastructure of the area, the old residences and tourist accommodation which vary in categories, large hotel units mainly at the coastal areas and tourist residences at the mountainous areas.Methodology. Initially, there will be an investigation considering the way the area of Apokoronas is organized in terms of it’s natural and built environment, including the monuments of the area and the role they play in it. Particular attention will be paid to the cases of the traditional houses and the houses that are used as tourist accommodation. as they will be studied in terms of the key features that characterize them, the impact they have on each other in combination with the natural landscape and the laws that affect them.Originality. This thesis is original in terms of evaluating the form of the tourist residence, while at the same time, it will examine the case of the abandoned, traditional residence and the possible ways to restore it considering its form, in order to reintegrate it to the active built environment, either for the case of tourist exploitation or not.The development of tourism should be in direct correlation with the protection, elevation and ethical exploitation, of the environmental and cultural heritage of each region and the main objective of this Postgraduate Diploma thesis is to create a proposal that brings Apokoronas closer to this kind of ideology.
