The purpose of this diploma thesis has been the precise geodetic determination of the absolute (geometric and then orthometric) height of groundwater level for aquifers at the region of Chania, Crete. Height determination has been carried out with the US satellite navigation system Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Earth Gravity Models.Thirty water pumping wells have been investigated across the west Crete at different aquifers. The absolute height of the water level at each well has been determined. Absolute horizontal and height coordinates have been computed relative to the fundamental global reference points of TUC2 (Technical University of Crete) and CRS1 (Chrisoskalitissa). Three-dimentional coordinates have been transformed into the Greek Geodetic Reference System (EGSA-87) and the World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS-84). The depth of ground water level has been measured for every well and final absolute heights of ground water level have been determined. Finally, diagrams have been created for the fluctuations of ground water levels with respect to absolute reference surfaces. Conclusions have been attempted for the evolution of salinization that could take place at several aquifers at Crete region.
