Summary

Occupational safety and health issues are of great importance to the mining industry since working in this workplace is characterized as one of the most dangerous works.Therefore, the mining industry sets the reduction of accidents to the highest priority.In the present work a statistical analysis of accidents in the Greek mining sector isconducted and the temporal variation of selected accident indices during 2001-2017 is studied, aiming to recognize the main causes and conditions associated with accidents.Firstly, primary accident data were collected from mines inspection agencies inNorthern and Southern Greece. Accidents with a very serious impact on the workers were selected for the study. These accidents included the fatal accidents, the accidents that caused permanent damage to workers and the accidents that caused serious temporary damage with long recovery duration, which potentially could lead to a permanent damage. A database was created for the systematic recording of accidents occurring both in surface and underground mines. Subsequently, the classification and the analysis of the factors associated with accidents were carried out, according to Grose's theory known also as 4M theory (Man, Media, Machine and Management).The results of the exploratory statistical analysis showed that based on the frequency index of fatal accidents per 100000 workers, the highest degree of risk is presented in quarries of marble-shale slabs and aggregates quarries. The main legislative violations identified relate to the non-use of personal protective equipment, inadequate training and supervision. During the period of 2001-2017 there is a slight downward trend in the frequency index (accidents per 100000 employees), while the correlation of accident indices with economic figures (GDP and Gross Value Added for the mining and quarrying sector) showed that the change in these figures does not significantly affect business policy on health and safety in the Greek mining industry.
