Summary

Particulate Matter is a significant pollutant which is associated with a variety of adverse effects on human health, including respiratory promblems, cardiovascular events and in some cases increased mortality. These effects depend on various factors, such us the morphology of the human respiratory system and the characteristics of PM (size, shape density, etc). The aim of this study was to investigate the PM exposure and calculate the deposited dose for a typical adult male/female in different indoor microenvironments inside the campus of the Technical University of Crete. Furthermore, PM concentrations variations were used to identify possible indoor sources in the studied microenvironments and estimate the effect of the outdoor environment in the indoor PM load. Four indoor microenvironments were selected for the measurements: a classroom, a laboratory, an office and the canteen of the School of Environmental Engineering. Simultaneous measurements were conducted outdoors, in closed proximity to the studied microenvironments. The instrumentation used in the campaigns consisted of two Dust Trak Aerosol monitors (TSI, Models 8532 and 8530), two Optical Particle Sizers (TSI Model 3330) and one P-Trak Ultrafine Particle Counter (TSI, model8525). Calculations of the regional deposited dose were performed using the respiratory tract model ExDoM2 for a hypothetical scenario of activities of a male/female student during a typical 6 hours stay in the above studied microenvironments, inside the Campus of the Technical University of Crete.
