Traditional settlements constitute a central part of the architecturaland cultural heritage of Greece. The study of their gradual construction,as well as their preservation as a vigorous part of contemporarysoceties, is of high importance, as they remain inhabited to this day. From the end of the 20th century and well into the first two decades ofthe 21st century, Greece has been experiencing a vast and, for the mostpart, uncontrollable growth in the tourist industry – one of the mostnotable examples being the island of Santorini (or Thira). The traditionalsettlements of the island are being threatened by this growth in thetourist industry and consequently a need to protect them arises. This paper is a study on the traditional settlement of Emborio inSantorini and its reshaping through the ages. Emborio is a perfectexample of a “fort-settlement” of the Cyclades, constructed around theprotective curtilage of the premier castle (the “Castelli”).Firstly, a short reference to the definition of traditional settlements, the defining characteristics of the Greek settlements of this kind, andthe laws around them are being offered.Further down, they evolution of both the island and the settlementare being discussed. There is a brief mentioning of all of the island’ssettlements and an analysis of the different types of residencies foundin Emborio. Furthermore, an analysis of the residencies within the“Castelli” of Emborio through an urban planning prism is offered. Theinterrelationship between public and private space is also being studied, both inside and outside of the forted part of the settlement.First-hand research on the contemporary state of the settlement isbeing presented, as well as the factors that shaped the settlement inits different eras. Finally, the impact of the tourist industry on the settlement is beingtranscribed and evaluated, taking into consideration the settlement’spresent form and its rate of change.
