The present study investigates the long history of the city of Heraklion, based on its form, structure and function, since the first historic evidence of its existence and up to the present time, through the events of each historical period that affected and shaped the city into its current form. The study attempts to examine the effect of the interventions that have taken place throughout the course of time on the historic city centre. Thus, it was decided to examine the urban centre through the various historical periods, in order to better understand the way it functioned and evolved. First and foremost, we investigated the historical course of Heraklion from the Minoan Era to the Ottoman occupation and studied the changes that occurred in the city centre. Then, we studied the interventions that took place during the 20th century, through the review of city plans. Last but not least, we recorded all the interventions that have taken place up to the present day, which have played a decisive role in shaping the current form and function of the historical city centre.
