Summary

Thessaloniki is a strategically located city, where different people, cultures, experiences and ideas intersect. Its port has a great impact on this intersection and its of utmost importance at national and international level. However, the lack of holistic design and proper port infrastructure limits its functionality to a mere physical border between the city and the sea. This diploma thesis aims to redefine the relationship between people and the sea and in particular the port, both from the visitors’ as well as the residents’ perspective. The starting point of the new design is the creation of a ‘landmark’ building that will function as the New Passenger Terminal, capable of meeting all operational needs of a modern harbour, while handling cruise ships and regular ferries. The new construction becomes part of the existing building complex also by creating a green cultural zone, which will form a transitional area between the port and the urban surroundings. The addition of the New Passenger Terminal in combination with multiple integrated cultural, recreational, touristic and commercial activities, the exploitation and expansion of transportation networks and the connection with the various heterogeneous parts of the city (such as the old seaside, Freedom Square, the Courts, the city Walls, the old railway station etc) attempt to reconcile the currently detached part of the port with the average person. This will lead to a wider cultural, tourist and commercial exploitation of the port itself. The aim of this proposal is to create a new point of attraction for residents as well as visitors from other regions of Greece, Europe and the world that will contribute to the city’s future, sustainable growth and development.
