Summary

The term swimming pool refers to artificial cavities in the ground or buildings that are being filled with water so that people can swim in or perform other water activities. To comply with olympic specifications, other than having the appropriate dimensions, the pools should be heated as defined by the laws in place. The associated technologies have been substantially evolved and they have gradually started to be applied in Greece. The pool heating mechanisms used in practice are usually old-fashioned and inefficient with respect to the energy consumption. The current thesis focuses on studying and comparing different technologies used to heat indoor Olympic pools.These methods/approaches have been applied for the swimming pool located in the area of Technical University of Crete, after a study of the system’s thermal losses. The associated calculations, the evaluated systems, as long as the data of the study, are according to the current Technical Chamber of Greece, the specifications of the Hellenic Organization for Standardization (ELOT), the European and International specifications DIN (Deutsche Industrie Normen) and ISO (International Organization of Standardization). The modeling and simulation of the alternative methods/approaches for supplying the necessary thermal load was done with the HOMER® software.In specific, the thesis focuses on five cases/scenarios for supporint the heating requirements of an Olympic pool. The first is a system with boiler – oil burner. The second is a system with boiler – natural gas burner, the third a system with boiler – biomass burner (with fuel pellet or pyrroloxyl), the forth a system with heat pumps, and the fifth a system with heat pumps in conjunction with solar panels. From the results the thesis identifies the optimal/best solution for heating an Olympic pool.
