In an era of increased environmental awareness, many countries turn to renewable energy sources for large scale applications (e.g. electricity generation power plants) or small scale installations (e.g. buildings’ heating and cooling). In this context it makes sense that there is an increasing interest for technologies that depend on renewable energy, such as geothermal systems, and their analytic study through advanced tools such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). In this study, we make a detailed review of academic sources that have used LCA in various applications of geothermal energy, as well as the technical and environmental capabilities this technology has to offer.
